Match Report – Uxbridge RFC vs Reeds Weybridge RFC – 24.11.18
Uxbridge RFC 12 pts Reeds Weybridge RFC 104pts – RFU JUNIOR VASE – THIRD ROUND
Uxbridge RFC are based in Hillingdon and have splendid facilities and superb playing conditions, they ply their trade in the second tier of the Herts and Middlesex league, but are currently in the bottom half of the table although they have had some close results and an emphatic win over Haringey last week. Having said that, Surrey rugby is one of the most competitive leagues on the circuit and the smart money was on Reeds coming away with the result, but no one expected that the victory would be so decisive. The first scrum of the day was a portent of things to come, up front, Josh Brown, Richard Philip, and hooker George Corner can generate some serious grunt and the Uxbridge pack went shunting backwards as Reeds turned on the power.
If you give Reeds backs some possession going forward, they can cause a lot of damage, and it was prop forward Brown who was the author of the first score, Brown hammered through the midfield following a good break from young winger James Botterill who made yards on the 5 meter channel with Brown neatly drawing the last man and offloading to George Corner to clock up a seven pointer.
Uxbridge had their share of the game in the loose encounters, with some success as their big forwards drove play up-field with a series of rucks and mauls but if the ball found its way into the Reeds back division there was trouble for the home side. Quick hands and passes as well were just too much for the defence and the scoreboard was clicking over remorselessly leaving Reeds with six tries on the board within the first quarter.
The big Uxbridge pack had some success when they decided to rumble the ball up the park keeping the possession deep in the maul and following 2 successive tap and go close quarter penalties they barrelled over from short distance for one first half try. Meanwhile, Reeds were cruising around with the ball in hand and at the break it was a ten to one try margin and Uxbridge just couldn’t get back into the game. There was no respite to the onslaught in that second half, Uxbridge battled on bravely but their near full-sized ground gave Reeds pacemen room to move and they made the best of it with another six tries in the second half with just one close range try from Uxbridge in reply.
James Botterill, the winger with four tries was top scorer of the afternoon with prop forward Josh Brown and centre Tom McLean collecting three apiece. Director of Rugby Nigel Connell was understandably pleased with the decisive result and commented that ‘it was a complete performance from his side with all 22 members of the squad seamlessly fitting in and contributing to the win’.
Man of the Match:
Josh Brown, the big prop forward collected the Man of the Match Award for his all-round performance up front and in open play.
Honourable mention also due to Kieran Machin for his 1st XV debut and following an assured display at full back.
The draw for the fourth round will take place on Wednesday November 28th with the matches to be played on February 2nd.
Next week, League rugby returns to Whiteley Village where Reeds will face a top of the table clash against local rivals Weybridge Vandals. Before the game, Reeds Weybridge President Simon Wallis will host his annual Presidents Lunch with many past players and guests from Weybridge Vandals attending.
