Reeds Fightback Falls Agonisingly Short

Although Reeds had the benefit of the slope in the first half, it was the visitors who piled on the pressure, especially in the forward exchanges giving them the territory and forcing Reeds into defensive mode for most of the half. Tiffinians clocked up the first score of the day with a pushover try but in a rare visit to Tiffinian territory Marcus Clark, Reeds mazy running winger, beat the cover to touch down after a smart back line move. Pete Cole, Reeds No 10, collected the extras and another long-distance penalty soon afterwards. Reeds lost a man to the bin. Tiffs took advantage up front and had three more tries on board at half time with Pete Cole keeping Reeds in touch with yet another long-distance penalty. (HT 13 : 22). Tiffinians certainly had the best of the possession in the first half, now they had the slope in their favour and took up residence deep in Reeds territory, two converted tries put them twenty-one points to the good and Reeds were looking at a heavy defeat. However, this game will be remembered for the way Reeds battled back from this position to almost win the game in the last moments. It was Chuggs Wallis who led the fight back, a defence busting charge up the midfield found Marcus Clark on hand to take the scoring pass. Wallis was soon in action again bursting through a couple of tackles to touch down under the sticks. Kerran Beavis, Reeds powerful prop forward, then bashed his way over to level the scores with Tiffinians down to 13 men. Tiffinians hit back with a late try to put them two points in front. In a nail biting few minutes Pete Cole slotted a huge penalty to put Reeds into a one-point lead (42 : 41) but Tiffinians had the last word with the final try of the day with 2 minutes remaining which was the final score (42 : 46).
Man of the Match was winger Aiden Procopis who is such a threat in attack and a devastating tackler in defence.
