The combination of the Presidents lunch, sunny weather, and promotion hopes for Beckenham attracted a huge crowd of spectators to Whiteley last Saturday. Reeds were down the slope in the first half and for the first quarter dominated the territory, they forced a five-metre lineout and rumbled over the line for a seven pointer. Given the territorial advantage Reeds enjoyed, they should have had some more points on the board, however, Beckenham kept their line secure with some excellent defence and ran the possession from all parts. Reeds lead was a short lived one, the Beckenham backs were giving the Reeds defence a hard time with quick hands firing the ball about until gaps appeared and No 8 Feldhouse-Davis had a clear run under the posts to equal the scores. Reeds certainly had the edge in the tight scrums and it was here that Kerran Beavis the influential prop forward earned his Man of the Match award, his massive contribution, especially when Reeds were in defensive trouble was crucial. But out wide Beckenham were having the best of the exchanges and three tries before the break saw Beckenham with four converted tries on the board against Reeds one and the visitors had the slope to come at 7 – 28. Reeds supporters hopes for a second have revival were soon dashed when a kick ahead from the Beckenham attack bounced kindly and it was another seven pointer, Kerran Beavis battered his way over to collect a second try for Reeds but there was no way Reeds were going to come back from that deficit. Four more tries from the visitors in that second half secured their position as second in the league and in the process, they inflicted Reeds worst ever defeat upon the hosts.
Nigel Connell Reeds Weybridge Director of Rugby commented afterwards that the Club is playing in the highest league since their foundation and to finish mid table is the result of the huge efforts that have been shown from players and officials throughout the season.
