In the early season home game, with fine weather and a partisan crowd behind them, Reeds had won by just six points, but away from home, Reeds, short of a few regulars and in difficult conditions, it was Sidcup who clocked up an impressive victory. In the early exchanges it was Sidcup who took up residence in Reeds half with their big pack of forwards providing quality ball, dominating possession forcing Reeds into defensive mode. Two quick tries in the first quarter followed by a long-distance penalty had Sidcup in front and looking good for more. Just before the break the big Sidcup forwards rumbled over the line before Reeds struck back, with young Rhys Homfrey, the utility back who forced his way over from ten metres for a seven-point response to make it 24 -7. Early in the second half Sidcup battered their way over the line for a converted try and there was no way Reeds were going to come back from that position, especially as Reeds lost a couple players to injury. Sidcup scored another thirty plus points in the second half with a late try for Reeds from Rhys Day the front row forward. Reeds battled against difficult weather conditions, injuries to key players during the game and a partisan crowd, however, the only real failure was to give up and Reeds didn’t – they battled on for the full eighty minutes against a big town pack that secured quality possession, that in turn demanded a huge defensive commitment. There will always be highs and lows, victories and defeats, witness Reeds remarkable come back against Reigatians two weeks ago. These are key experiences that Reeds can learn from and draw on in the future.
