Reeds Go Down Fighting in League Opener

REGIONAL 2 SOUTH EAST

BECKENHAM 27 REEDS WEYBRIDGE 13

This was a ‘no holds barred’ confrontational game between two aggressive sides who were keen to collect the winning points and it was Beckenham, urged on by a partisan crowd who made the best use of their possession and collected all 5 league points. However, early on it was Reeds who went into the lead by way of two siege gun penalty shots from Pete Cole, but it was Beckenham who had the best of the territory and they had some serious pace together with sharp handling skills out wide, Aussie winger Geordie Boyce, was causing Reeds all sorts of problems. He outpaced the cover to touch down for their first converted try and then quick hands gave space out wide for Beckenham to collect their second of the day. Reeds were adrift by five points and were locked into defensive mode, but just before the break, Reeds, had a man in the bin, a five-metre scrum rumbled forward and Beckenham were two converted tries in front at the change round. Shortly after the break, Beckenham collected their third try of the day and a comfortable twenty-one point lead, they might have led by more except for a stunning try saving tackle from young Will Jones who hammered the attack into touch short of the line. But Reeds led by their indomitable skipper Herbie Finn battled back into the game, following some ferocious exchanges in the loose they managed to give Jack Jesty the No 10 some space to dive into the corner for a converted try. This was a fiery baptism for some of Reeds younger players including 4 new debutants, they were against a strong and capable set of forwards and quick backs as well, and it was in that confrontational situation that Chuggs Wallis, the back row forward, inspirational display in attack and defence, earned him the Man of the Match Award.
